Advanced Woodworking Projects
& Constrution

Course Description

This is an advanced course in manufacturing through the study of woodworking and wood construction. This course will be run as a combination of the Advanced Woodworking and Residential Construction classes. Students will be instructed through a hands-on, problem-solving approach. Course topics will include units on Mass Production, Cabinetry, Advanced Techniques & Joinery, and Residential Wood Framing & Construction. Class projects will include advanced woodworking projects, class production projects, a wood-framed garden shed to be sold to a local customer, and any other project as needed by the school or town community.

What are we working on now?

Students are currently working on individual project of their own choice. We will be starting a review of Hand tools and their uses soon, and will then jump into an abbreviated form of a residential construction unit. To conclude this unit we will be building a small wood framed structure. In the past we have done small garden sheds, but it looks like this year we may be building a bus stop. In the not so distant future, we might also be designing and building some storage cabinets for Eric Larson, the principal of Burr Elementary.

Projects

During Woods II we will be working mostly on class projects to give students a look at production work in woodworking. We will work on projects for the school and/or community such as trophy cases, book cases, benches and then we will do a project later in the spring as a fund raiser for the shop. I will also be covering a unit on Residential Construction later in the course. In this unit we will be covering the basics of home building, including wood framing, plumbing systems and repair, electrical systems and repair, heating systems and repair. This unit will culminate in a class shed build to be sold to a local resident.

Each student will be required to work on individual projects to fill the time between class projects. These projects can be of the student’s choice but must be within reason according to the student’s ability and the shops finances.
Each Project will be graded by the attached Project/Portfolio Rubric.

Safety

Safety is our number one focus in this Wood shop!
Safety will also be a component of your weekly grade.
In addition there will be a three strike policy regarding safety.
Each violation, such as: not wearing safety glasses, unsafe operation of machines, horse play, and any other violation of the classroom rules or safety codes, will be counted as a strike. After three strikes the student will be asked to stay for a lunch detention. If the student strikes out a second time they will be required to stay for an after school detention and/or may be removed from the class.

Assessments

Quizzes may be given whenever necessary and will cover the information covered during Monday lessons and demonstrations, as well as anything covered throughout the class. The mid-term will be given prior to the first quarter grades closing. The final will be cumulative.
